According to a latest report by World Travel & Tourism Council, there were 317,300 employers working in the travel & tourism (T&T) sector in 2016 in UAE and it is expected that this number will increase to 394,700 by 2026. It shows that around 77,400 new jobs will be available only in the T&T sector in UAE. According to estimates, the T&T sector will contribute 10.6% in the country’s GDP in 2026 up from 9.4% in 2016.
Like most of the other sectors, the T&T is also dominated by the emirate of Dubai and the increase of job opportunities in this sector will be most evident in Dubai. In 2016, there were around 169,100 people working in the said area and their numbers are expected to increase up to 223,600 by 2026. It means that around 54,600 new jobs in T&T sector will be available in the next 8 years in Dubai. There were 10.8% people in Dubai working in the same sector in 2016 and this percentage will increase to 12.2% according to the report.
An important reason for such an extravagant increase for jobs in the tourism field in Dubai and UAE is the upcoming Expo 2020 in Dubai. The emirate of Dubai is spending heavily on construction of several tourist attractions before the start of Dubai Expo 2020 including new mega projects, development of Al Maktoum Airport, expansion of emirate’s retail etc. These are important projects responsible for creating new job opportunities in the T&T sector in Dubai.
Several other factors are also increasing the prospects of tourist activities in UAE. The UAE-based airlines have expanded their reach to new destinations in recent years and UAE’s latest decision to grant visas on arrival to tourists from China and Russia are few such examples of the measures taken by UAE government to enhance tourism in the country. Increase in tourist activities is clear indication of increase in job opportunities in UAE.
